One of the key focus areas that we have identified as UCW CSR is the intervention in education especially the Maths and Science given the status quo of our Grade 12 results in Maths and Science. There is a great concern of poor performance in these two areas of learning.
The World Economic Forum’s annual report for 2012 has indicated that South Africa is last in a ranking of 62 countries in the quality of Maths and Science Education. It is also clearly based on the census results released in 2011 that our country has a serious challenge; the results have shown that a decade ago 2.7% of men and 2% of women had tertiary qualifications in the field of Natural Physical and Mathematical Science and by 2011 this had declined to 2% of men and 1.8% of women. This clearly indicates that we will have few learners who take up these subjects at University level and it further creates a lack of Black African representation in Maths and Science professions.
Given these scenarios, as business we need to partner with the Department of Basic Education in addressing the challenges and developing ways of improving in Science and Maths.
